Home Video-EEG monitoring

Continuous video-EEG recording in the patient’s own home over 2 to 4 nights — for accurate diagnosis and management of seizure disorders.

What is home video-EEG?

Home video-EEG combines continuous EEG (brain wave) monitoring with simultaneous audio and video recording, performed in the patient’s own home, usually over 2–4 nights. This allows our neurologists to capture and review actual seizure events in their natural setting, providing diagnostic information that is often not achievable with a standard clinic-based EEG.

This service is available from our Box Hill clinic, with equipment setup and disconnection performed at our clinic at Epworth Eastern.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Patients with episodes that have not been captured on a routine or prolonged EEG
  • Patients where it is unclear whether episodes are epileptic seizures or non-epileptic events
  • Patients with predominantly nocturnal seizures or sleep-related episodes
  • Patients where video documentation of seizure semiology would assist with diagnosis or epilepsy classification
  • Patients who have difficulty attending extended in-clinic monitoring

How it works

1
Referral & booking
Your doctor refers you for home video-EEG. Our team contacts you to arrange a setup appointment and explain the process.
2
Equipment setup at Box Hill
EEG electrodes and recording equipment are applied at our Box Hill clinic. This takes approximately 60–90 minutes.
3
Monitoring at home
You wear the EEG equipment at home for 2 or 4 nights. You sleep in your own bed and continue your normal evening routine. A push-button event marker lets you flag any episodes you notice.
4
Equipment return
You return to our Box Hill clinic for electrode removal and equipment return. The recording is then downloaded and prepared for review.
5
Specialist report
Our neurologist reviews the complete video-EEG recording and provides a detailed written report to your referring doctor.

Travel & accommodation support for regional patients

Because equipment setup and removal takes place at our Box Hill clinic, patients travelling from regional areas (more than 1-2 hours driving time from our clinic) will need to be in Melbourne for the duration of the study. Patients from the regional areas regularly attend for home video-EEG, typically arranging privately paid accommodation near the clinic.

If you live in rural or regional area and need to travel more than 100km for this service, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS) or Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS). IPTAAS and VPTAS subsidises travel costs and accommodation (up to $45/night) for eligible rural patients travelling for specialist medical care.

To apply, visit the VPTAS online portal or call 1300 737 073. Our specialist will sign the relevant section of the form confirming your treatment dates and accommodation requirements.

NSW patients may be eligible for assistance through the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS). Visit health.nsw.gov.au/iptaas for more information.

Fees & Medicare

Home video-EEG requires a valid referral and attracts a Medicare rebate. An out-of-pocket fee applies. Please contact our rooms for current fee information.
